Gas detectors can be used to detect combustible, flammable and toxic gases, and oxygen depletion. This type of device is used widely in industry and can be found in locations, such as on oil rigs, to monitor manufacture processes and emerging technologies. Wherever flammable gases or vapors exist, there is always an increased risk of explosion. This is typically the case in the following areas: mining, refining, chemical industries, and many more.
Installation should always be by skilled workmen under proper supervision to ensure use of proper size and type of external cables, correct gland termination, proper gasket placement, cleanliness, correct insulation resistance right up to terminal required & intact fixing of all screws and earthing connections.
Timely checks for prevention / replacement of corrosion, rust, cracks, dirt, worn out / displaced gaskets, tightness of fixing screws, terminals, earth connection & cable glands should be made. Ensure that the name / warning plates of equipment are properly positioned.
List of Items to be taken care during initial inspection/installation.
1. Apparatus appropriate for the area classification
2. Correct temperature classification
3. Appropriate apparatus group or sub-group
4. Correct circuit identification
5. Maintenance of integrity of enclosure
6. Cable entries and stoppers, etc, are complete
7. Electrical connections are tight
8. Satisfactory earthing
9. Damage to installation
10. Adequate environmental protection (e.g. against weather, mechanical damage).
All these equipment’s are as per Indian Standard for various protection like Ex-d or Ex-e is suitable for use in Gas Group – I, IIA, IIB & IIC with weather protection IP 55/65/66.
These enclosures are generally used in places where there is a fear of high operating temperatures. As these enclosures have the ability to bear high temperatures, they can actually protect the machine from different types of explosion caused by sparks and voltage surges.
Apart from protecting the machines, these devices also help protect the working professionals who are operating these machines. These enclosures even help these workers from explosive conditions, which are caused by overheating devices and electrical fluctuations.
